Down time

My husband crashed the computer a few days ago. Maybe it was a good thing since I don't seem to have much down time when it is up. Instead of cruising here- I read a book. It was a historical fiction. A good way to find my mind for a few minutes.
My husband is on the mend. Tuesday is his turning point in his mind. I am looking forward to seeing his smile again.

OW!

The market is killing me.
I wonder what having a Democrat in the White House with both houses of Congress Democrat as well will do for my retirement plans.....

Here goes- Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children
When a preschool child's home language is not primarily English, the ease of learning to read printed in English is likely to be inpeded to some extent, particularly if reading instruction in English has aquired oral proficiency in English.
OK- since my dh moved the computer into the laundry room- the access to more fun books is limited by lack of corner book shelves!

Seven weird things about you....
1. I am a political junkie
2. I love to travel- but hate to fly...actually scared of flying and say a "good act of contrition"every time we take off in case it is my last flight.
3. I have great faith- but am weak at the practice of religion.
4. I miss the city things of plays, opera, sports, and shopping- but not enough to ever move back to a city willingly.
5. I may complain about my husband- but I would have a difficult time functioning without him- he is my rock.
6. I feel like I have more to offer the world- but I am content to be here in my house. I am worn out by the weekend and feel like I cannot give if I do not rejuvinate on the couch!
7. One of these days I finally WILL join the Peace Corps.

OK - Ms N. (whose blog I love as well) and everyone who wants to play....Flying by the seat of my pants, My Domestic Church, This That and the Other Thing, My Garden in Garmisch, The Gashlings , A day in the life....

Step One

Getting my financial house in order is the first step in being frugal. How do you do that?
I love the inspiration of Frank Llyod Wright - simple - but complex...so off for the simple- but complex way of looking at things.

For the last few years I have been a hawk on our monthly budget. I know that our downfall is spending for travel and kiddos...but those are all right. They just have to fit the budget. We went from two incomes and one pension to one income and one pension pretty easily (which makes me ill to think how much we spent in the time of two larger incomes and one pension). Past is past- move on.

Second is charting our investments. I have been doning this for the last 18 months. Actually charting them - and recharting every month- makes us save even more (if that seems possible).

Third is our pantry. I have learned what we do and do not use in our pantry. I also learned a valuable lesson during the ice storm "week without power" what we really need. Why buy "basics" that we will never use. Out goes the huge bags of flour. Energy is more expensive than doing something different in a storm or any other thing that will keep us from the store for a week or more (including a gas tank that costs $50. to fill).

Four is my realization that we need a new/differnt source of energy. My sister began my collection by giving me a solar battery charger. I am seriously looking at solar panels for the roof or something else. Wind power makes sense out here on the prarie.

There are so many aspects of being frugal...I have only just begun!

More thinking tomorrow.
