But her advice about kids and college definately comes from a woman with no children.
College costs are NOT what they were when I went to college. The average class (at a junior college on the east coast) is about $500. Tuition for junior college is close to the same as a four year - six years ago. I am in sticker shock!
My son made it through- but my daughter has not. I am afraid that by the time she decides to go the cost will be so high she/we will not be able to afford it.
I love the people who say "the scholarships are all out there- just grab the golden ring!" True, if you are a child who begins college the semester after high school. They disappear soon after. People LOVE giving sholarships tojust graduated freshman and will renew them. A 25 year old freshman- or sophomore- or a transfer student- the money disappears..... They offer loans....with big price tags.
My first years of teaching- if I had taken out loans for college- it would have taken me about 4 years to pay off the $7000. it cost for me to go to four years of public college. The starting teacher's salary is now 3 times what I made 25 years ago. That same college (the cheapest one in my home state) would cost about $40,000. That means that it would take 5.7 years to pay off the debt- dollar for dollar. That is for four years of college- not six. And that is becoming a teacher....
Don't fool yourself that a child can make it through five years of college (the average now for years in college is six years) without help. Sure they can do it- but they will have the debt of a house and will have little chance of getting out from under it easily.

It is difficult to believe that it has been that long. Our children are settling into adulthood and we are in a place that we love. It is really time to take the opportunity to fall in love again. Sometimes, I become complacent. It is easy to just do day to day with your best friend.
We are really beginning to look forward to year thirty! Maybe that big day we will not be attending a graduation or birth (or maybe we will:>)

I just want to do everything I can to make sure the next generation has what it needs to be the best. Here is this child. He is so precious. He is so attached to his mommy. He will need so much love to grow into the man who can change a small piece of the world for the better.
The amazing thing is that he uses his sign language to call for Jen- but when he is verbal it is dadadadada. To me that means that he is so secure that his mommy is close enough to "hear" his sign for her- that he has no need to call her verbally. Nicholas pulls in everything. He just is bright and shining and interested and shy. Those eyes are always watching and he can hear the slightest comment:>)
What is my role? Love, Love, love. Support, support, support. Teach, teach, teach. They are such a wonderful family. I am so glad that I could be with them and they could be with my mom.
Yes, Hawaii was wonderful. I spent my six months of allowance on little tiny things. The result of the trip was priceless- time with my mother, my daughter, my son in law and...my grandbaby!

I actually plan on which Mass to attend around Meet the Press.
Who will they get to replace Tim Russert?
Tim was a expert interviewer-who could catch someone in a lie in an instant. Scott and I have been worried about him as of late. He has looked a bit ragged....we were assuming it was the party of having his son graduate from BC.
I will say a special prayer for Tim tonight. Sunday will not be the same!

What a crew!
Here one of my "olders" is showing off our daily art project- a beach ball that could be colored!
No matter how you feel on his stance- he is an AMAZING speaker. He is what I wish so many of the politicians were- genuine. His spirit is so high. You can see his light and it is not fake. After his speech last night his wife said to him (I am great at lip reading), "That was good", and he gently said back,"thank you", and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
Don't you think we NEED that type of person running our country?
